Saint Cuthbert and the Otters | Relief Print on an 1870's Galley Press

The Shepherd of the North
Saint Cuthbert (c. 634–687) remains one of the most revered and impactful figures in English history. Often called the "Wonder-worker of Britain," Cuthbert’s legacy is characterized by a remarkable balance of solitary devotion and unwavering service. Beginning his journey as a humble shepherd, he ascended to the role of Prior of Melrose and ultimately became the Bishop of Lindisfarne. Despite his elevated status, he was recognized for traversing the remote regions of Northumbria on foot and horseback, offering solace and spiritual guidance to those frequently overlooked by society.

A Sacred Connection to Nature
Cuthbert’s profound connection to the natural world makes him particularly resonant with artists and nature enthusiasts today. He was an early proponent of what modern terminology might describe as wildlife conservation. Accounts depict him standing waist-deep in the frigid North Sea to pray, only to witness a pair of otters emerge from the waves to warm his feet with their fur—a moment exquisitely captured in this relief print. He also instituted some of the earliest bird protection laws on the Farne Islands to safeguard the Eider ducks, which continue to be affectionately referred to locally as "Cuddy’s Ducks."

About the Materials
The Paper: Arnhem 1618 is a premium printmaking paper sourced from the Netherlands. It features a soft, velvety surface that allows for deep ink absorption while preserving crisp detail. Its archival quality ensures that this print will resist yellowing or degradation over time.

The Ink: We employ a high-pigment "Rich Black" ink that establishes a striking contrast against the paper. Its matte finish provides a classic, timeless aesthetic that avoids glare commonly found in digital prints.

The Process: Each piece is hand-pulled, resulting in slight, unique variations in the ink density of every print—rendering your specific piece a one-of-a-kind work of art.

Shipping & Framing Tips
Framing: The 8x16 inch "panoramic" format is ideally showcased in a float frame, which allows the exquisite edges of the Arnhem paper to remain visible.

Packaging: Shipped flat in a reinforced mailer (or rolled in a heavy-duty tube) to guarantee it arrives in impeccable condition.
